What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of structuring your content so an answer engine can lift a clear, correct answer straight from your page. Where classic SEO competes for a ranking position, AEO competes to be the response itself.
Why AEO matters now
More people now ask a question and act on the single answer that comes back, inside Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini. There is no page two. If your answer is the one that gets quoted, you win the visit and the trust. If it is not, you are invisible, even when you rank well in the old sense.
How answer engines pick an answer
An answer engine reads a page the way a fast, literal reader would. It looks for:
- A clear question being addressed, usually in a heading.
- A direct answer in the first sentence or two below it.
- Supporting detail that backs the answer up.
- Signals that the source is credible and current.
If it has to dig through three paragraphs of preamble to find your point, it moves on to a page that gets there faster.
How to do AEO
Lead with the answer. Put the direct answer in the first line under each heading, then explain. This is the single highest leverage change most pages can make.
Write headings as real questions. People and models both phrase things as questions, so a heading that matches the question is easier to match to the query.
Use structure machines can parse. Short paragraphs, lists and tables make the answer easy to lift. A wall of text hides it.
Add the right schema. FAQ, Article and Organization markup tell the engine what your content is and who stands behind it.
Be the credible source. Show real expertise, give your reasoning, and keep the page current. Answer engines favor sources they can trust to be right.
How to measure it
Track whether your brand shows up in the answers themselves, not just the rankings. Ask the engines the questions your customers ask, and see who gets quoted. Over time you want to be the source named, or the answer pulled, for the questions that matter to your business.
